Charles John “Chuck” “Papa” Schmith, 84 of Sioux City, Iowa passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024 at a local nursing facility. Funeral Services will be at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverend Scott Squires officiating. Visitation, with the family present, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com
Chuck was born on May 10, 1939 in Hospers, Iowa to Arnold and Florence (Schwebach) Schmith. The family lived in Paullina, Iowa during his early childhood, moved to Sioux City in 1953, where Chuck graduated from East High School with the Class of 1959. He went on to continue his education, and received his degree from Morningside College in business administration.
Chuck worked for a couple years at a clothing store in downtown Sioux City before working at Needham Packing Company for nine years. He then joined the crew at IBP and work there for 24 years. He worked for Peterson Farms for 10 years, and the loved the cattle business, and visiting with people.
Chuck married Martha “Marty” in 1978, combining two families. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing cards, and was a sports enthusiast. He loved cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Briar Cliff Volleyball, and loved watching and encouraging his grandchildren in various sports.
Chuck is survived by his wife Marty of Wagner, South Dakota; children Mike (Donaline) Schmith of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Mark (Angie) Schmith of Sioux City, Steve (Connie) Hamsa of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Lisa (Whitey) Tolliver of Wagner, South Dakota; brother Nick (Debbie) Schmith of Sioux City, brother Bob (Karen) Schmith of Sioux City, sister Teresa (Dave) Wenham of Sioux City; 16 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jim, Roger, and Arnold, and sisters Charleene and Charlotte.
