Carl Victor Bylin

July 20, 1946 — February 6, 2025

Knoxville, Tennessee

Carl was born to John P. Bylin and Alverda E. Bylin in Sioux City, Iowa where he grew up with sister Margaret and brothers John A. and Robert O. He attended Central high School and Morningside College ant then graduated with a BS Math degree from Iowa State University.

Carl joined the US Air Force and was stationed at Holloman AFB, White Sand Proving Grounds In New Mexico. He returned to Sioux City and married Nancy Lee Boden, his forever partner in life.

Carl then pursued his education at Colorado State University with a degree in Forest Biometrics and at Michigan State University with a master’s degree in Forest Technology. He joined the US Forest Service and spent over 30 years researching tree and forest technology at over 9 locations throughout the United States. He and Nancy then retired in Knoxville, TN in 2001 where they pursued his love for fishing (particularly Many Point Lake and Ely , MN) and for supporting the Boy Scouts and the Order of the Arrow.

During his 20’s, Carl joined the Boy Scouts as an adult supervisor and acquired his expertise in Indian Folk Lore. He trained as a Boy Scout Leader and held several Assistant Scout Master positions. While based in Starkville, MS, Carl started an All-Black Boy Scout Troop. He was committed to sharing his knowledge of Native Indian drumming, dancing and regalia. He and Nancy taught the Indian Lore Merit Badge at summer camps, and they attended Boy Scout Jamborees in England and throughout the United States.

At his church in Knoxville, he assisted with the men’s BBQ every year and encouraged the Veteran’s breakfast. He and Nancy attended and supported the Church as long as possible. His declining health, starting in 2013, limited his participation in church and Boy Scout activities but he was still determined to enjoy cribbage with friends, traveling and fishing activities throughout his retirement days.
