Obituary

Candyce “Candy” Ann Noonan-Johnson, age 76, passed away on March 19, 2026.

Candy was born on August 4, 1949, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Don O’Neil and Ellen Mathson O’Neil. She attended Bryant Elementary School, North Junior High, and Central High School, graduating in 1967. She spent many of her younger years at the Sioux City Boat Club, where she enjoyed swimming and learning to golf. Candy went on to attend Briar Cliff College and the University of Northern Iowa, graduating from Briar Cliff in 1972 with a degree in physical education.

In 1971, she married Burke Noonan, and together they welcomed three children: Brian, Leah, and Sarah. She later married Gary Johnson in 1992, and they shared many wonderful years together.

During her high school and college years, Candy worked at Plaza Bowl and at her father’s pool hall, the Carom House. She also served as a summer playground director at Riverview Elementary School for three summers. After her children were older, she joined The Bread Basket, where she worked as a manager for several years. Following its closure, she joined the Sioux City Community School District, where she worked as an ESL tutor at Smith and Liberty Elementary Schools. Even after retiring, she continued volunteering at Liberty Elementary for three more years.

Candy was deeply involved in her community. She served as a board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters during its early years in Sioux City, belonged to the Junior League of Sioux City, and was an active member of First Lutheran Church, where she served on the church council twice.

She had a lifelong love of activities and friendships. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling league and later became an avid golfer, playing in two different leagues. After retirement, she discovered pickleball and quickly grew to love the sport. Playing bridge was a cherished part of her life for many years, and most recently she enjoyed learning and playing Mahjong.

Candy is survived by her husband of 33 years, Gary Johnson,

Son, Brian Noonan (wife, Dessa Noonan), and their children, Ursella, Camellia, and Mireille Noonan;

Daughter, Leah Noonan (husband, Mark Greim), and their children, Grace and Anna Greim;

Daughter, Sarah Noonan, and her son, Khyren Plummer;

Stepdaughter, Leah Andersen (husband, Chris Andersen); and their children, Kylie Eriksen (husband, Jordan Eriksen) and Baylie Andersen (fiancé, Thomas Holzman)

Great-grandchildren, Camden, Dawson and Parker Eriksen;

Brothers, Steve O’Neil and Denny O’Neil;

and many extended family members and friends.
