Calvin "Cal" Swagerty

September 9, 1923 — November 18, 2022

Calvin “Cal” Swagerty, 99, of Wakefield, NE, passed away November 18, 2022 at a local hospital.  A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, November 22nd at 3:00 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield.  Burial with military honors will be at Wakefield City Cemetery.  Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.  Online condolences may be made to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

 

Cal was born on September 9, 1923 in Wakefield, NE to Nep and Edna (Johnson) Swagerty.  He was baptized at Wakefield Methodist Church and attended school at Park Hill School and Wakefield High School up to the sophomore grade.  Cal served in the United States Army in World War II. He served in the 35th Infantry Division and experienced many battles.  He married Bonnie Longe in Leavenworth, KS.  They farmed northwest of Wakefield for 15 years when they moved southwest of Wakefield and farmed 3 years.  They moved to South Sioux City, NE and Cal worked at the Sioux City Stockyards.  He started driving truck for IBP and then Hirschback Truck Liner.  Cal and Bonnie drove coast to coast for 12 years.  They operated a Wakefield bar for a year.  They then returned to driving truck for nine years.  Cal then drove truck for Ralph Oswald.  Cal was a member of Salem Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and had a lifetime membership in the American Legion and the VFW.

 

He is survived by his son Terry (Ann) Swagerty; son-in-law, Mike Wood; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 infant daughters; wife, Bonnie; daughter, Betty; brother, Bob; 1 infant sister and 1 infant brother.
