Byron E. Dawdy

January 11, 1951 — September 5, 2024

Sioux City, IA

Byron Edward Dawdy, 73, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, September 5, 2024 at his residence. Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 12, 2024 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

Byron, the son of Eugene and Geneive “Jenny” (Lloyd) Dawdy, was born January 11, 1951 in Mapleton, Iowa. He graduated from Remsen-Union High School in Remsen, Iowa, in May of 1969. He was active in vocal music, wrestling, and basketball. Byron was one that didn’t have to study and still made the honor roll. Starting in high school, Byron and his friends started a band called The Teenage Rebellion.

Byron, like his Grandpa Dawdy, had an ear for music and was a self-taught musician, playing lead guitar and was the lead singer. The band traveled the Midwest extensively, even making a demo recording due to their talent and popularity. Following high school, Byron enrolled at Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, getting a Bachelor’s Degree to teach English, and later in his life studied towards obtaining his Master’s Degree at the University of South Dakota.

On June 10, 1972, Byron married Mary June Cronin in Le Mars, Iowa. Upon his college graduation, Byron and Mary Jane decided to go on an adventure and moved to Queensland, Australia, where Byron taught English there for two years. He loved Australia but missed family, and upon the end of his contract they moved back to Le Mars. Byron moved to Chaska, Minnesota, and taught eighth grade English and coached Girl’s Basketball in Belle Plaines, Minnesota. In 1986, the folks and Byron moved to Sioux City and Byron did substitute teaching for the Sioux City Community School System.

Byron was intelligent, soft-hearted, loving, caring, and a forever protector of his sister, Pam. Byron enjoyed watching sports, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 49ers, and WWE to name a few. The Dawdy guys love their sports!

Byron is survived by his sister, Pamela Ruhland of Sioux City; Uncle Edward Dawdy, of Sioux City; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Eugene; grandparents, Lloyd and Velira Dawdy and James and Nettie Lloyd; Uncle Shine, Aunt Sharon, Uncle Jim, Aunt Gail Lloyd, Aunt Inez and Uncle John Mead, Aunt Selma and Uncle Freeman Bonnes, Aunt Barb Dawdy, Aunt Beth and Uncle Don Jessen, Aunt Ginny and Uncle Ronnie Uhl; and a brother-in-law, James Ruhland; and cousins Michael Dawdy, Neal Lloyd, and James Mead.
