Brian Herbert Smith

Brian Herbert Smith, a devoted son, loving father, and cherished brother, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2025, in Onawa, IA, after bravely fighting a four-year battle with cancer. Born on August 9, 1961, in Ames, IA, Brian was the son of Jay Carleton and Virginia Lea (Brady) Smith.

Brian graduated from North High School in Sioux City. While in school, he enjoyed playing basketball at Westfield and participating in choir at North. He later attended the University of South Dakota.

Throughout his career, Brian worked in various fields, though his most beloved role was selling insurance alongside his father. This job allowed him not only to develop his skills, but also to enjoy cherished moments with a man he deeply admired. He also enjoyed driving a cab for several years, where he was able to get to know new people every day.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Brian created lasting memories with his family. He often reminisced about joyful times like going horseback riding, mushroom hunting, and learning to drive a stick shift with his brother, Neal. He also loved deer and pheasant hunting with his brother and dad, as well as fishing in Minnesota, boating, inner tubing, and singing in Siouxland Discovery Chorus. He enjoyed being continually surrounded with family and friends.

Brian was known for his infectious sense of humor and ability to connect with anyone he encountered. His friendly demeanor and warmth endeared him to all, and his ability to make others laugh was a hallmark of his personality. He appreciated every moment he spent with his loved ones, demonstrating through his actions how much he cherished these relationships.

He is survived by his son, Joshua Smith; two granddaughters; his brother, Neal Smith; and his sister, Renee (Mike) Anson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Sarah.

Brian will be remembered not only for his joyful spirit but also for the profound love he had for his family and friends. Though he has departed, his memory and the laughter he brought into the lives of those who knew him will forever remain.

A Celebration of Life will be held on December 6, 2025, at First Christian Church in Sioux City, IA. Family will gather at 1pm, and the service will begin at 1:30. An afternoon meal will be served following the service.
