Beverly May Anderson, daughter of Ada and Carl Anderson, was born on June 12, 1936 in Lyons, Nebraska. Bev attended country school in Rosalie and graduated with honors from Rosalie High School with the class of 1954. Following graduation, she attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, where she earned her Associate’s Degree in Business in May of 1956. Upon earning this degree, Bev moved to Lincoln and worked for State Farm Insurance.
Bev met the love of her life Dale Engelbart from Pender while visiting a high school friend over Thanksgiving. After a brief courtship, they were married at the United Methodist Church in Lyons on June 23, 1957. The newlyweds resided in Bancroft, and Bev worked at Meierdierks Hardware in Pender. To this union, they were blessed with three daughters: Lori, Lynn, and Lea.
In 1959, the Engelbarts moved to South Sioux City. As a young mother, Bev provided a home daycare for a small group of children. In 1972, Bev accepted a secretarial job at the South Sioux City Community Schools Administration Office. Quickly advancing, she was promoted to an Administrative Assistant position and did the payroll and had numerous other responsibilities until her forty-five year tenure ended when Bev retired in 2017 at the age of 80.
Bev was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church. She sang in the church choir and served as an Elder and as a Sunday School/Bible School Teacher for many years. Bev’s love of music led her to also sing in the South Sioux City Community Chorus and as a part of a Sextet with five close church friends. She also was a member of Hobbycraft Extension Club, the Order of the Eastern Star/Laura Chapter # 301, and P.E.O.
Bev is survived by her children: Lori Sis (Jeff) of Denison, Iowa; Lynn Knuppel of South Sioux City; and Lea McMonigle (Craig) of Overland Park, Kansas. Six grandchildren, along with those who have spouses, and eight great-grandchildren (with another one expected in November) complete her family circle. Her husband Dale, her parents Ada and Carl Anderson, along with her only sister Imogene Waner, and numerous other relatives and close friends preceded her in death. She is also survived by other loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, a multitude of friends, and her “adopted” daughter and cherished friend and neighbor Lesa Merchant.
Bev’s family sincerely appreciates the many thoughts and prayers, and while they are deeply saddened by their loss, they are extremely thankful that “Ma Bev” was surrounded by the love of her family and friends for so many years. Knowing that she is now in the presence of her loving Heavenly Father and no longer battling health complications brings them lasting peace. The family requests that in lieu of sending flowers, people direct their memorial gifts to the family or to the First Presbyterian Church in South Sioux City.
