Bertha M. Hines, 91 formerly of South Sioux City, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2026 in Woodbine, Iowa. A funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, May 21, 2026 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M. the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to the National Breast Cancer Foundation at nationalbreastcancer.org.

Bertha was born the daughter of Fred and Fanny (Krienbuhl) Stulken on May 14, 1935 in Jerauld County, South Dakota. She graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1953 and then completed teacher’s college at Black Hills Teacher’s College. Bertha married Wesley Hines on December 22, 1957 in Huron, South Dakota. They were married 53 years until Wesley passed away in 2011.

Bertha taught school for a short time in South Dakota before the family moved to South Sioux City in 1972. She became a homemaker to raise her children. She also ran an in-home daycare for several years.

Bertha enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She liked bowling. She was on a women’s league for many years. She kept a wonderful vegetable garden and did a lot of canning.

Bertha is survived by her son, Wesley Jr. and his wife Jody of Dakota City; five daughters, Malberta Bousquet of Sioux City, Annette and her husband Jay Miller of Balaton, Minnesota, Theresa Hines of Harlan, Iowa, Mary and her husband Bill Benner of Harlan, Iowa, Trudy and her husband Dan Nienaber of Beatrice, Nebraska; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Doug, Karen (John), Kenny (Vicki), Catherine (Earl), Brian, John; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wesley; daughter, Radeen; siblings, Cora Jean, Dean, Phyllis, Fred Jr., Kevin.
