Berneice M. Trembly

July 11, 1929 — January 8, 2026

Sioux City

Berneice Menard Trembly passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City Iowa, surrounded by her children. The family will join the Holy Spirit community at their regular daily rosary and Mass on Friday, January 9, 2026 at 10:00 am in the Holy Spirit chapel. Still to be arranged are burial services in Concordia, KS where Don is buried.

Berneice was born July 11, 1929 and grew up in the tiny town of Morganville, Kansas, the treasured only child of Ed and Julia Menard. After graduating high school, she attended nurses training in Concordia, KS, and passed her state boards as a Registered Nurse.

While a student in Concordia, she was set up on a blind date with her future husband, Don Trembly. They married in December 1951 and set off on a life of love and adventure together. They made their first home in Broadstairs, England where Don was stationed with the US Air Force. Their oldest daughter Peggy Anne was born there. They returned to the US and settled in Sioux City, where three more children, Julie, Michelle and Scott, followed. Berneice was also the proud grandmother of 10 and great grandmother of 9.

Berneice’s work as a Registered Nurse was important to her and her family shared her pride. She worked for most of her professional life at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sioux City, in a variety of clinical settings including pediatrics and urology.

Berneice and Don were faithful Catholics throughout their 52 years of marriage. For many years, after retirement, they were daily communicants. Their son Scott joked that his parents were the only people he knew who went to church every day EXCEPT Sunday.

Berneice will be remembered for so many things, especially for her great baking skills (bread and pies!), her green thumb, and her way with animals. She and Don were avid sports fans, especially football. They faithfully attended Heelan football games (home and away) during all the years they lived in Sioux City. Don was the golfer in the family but after his death Berneice closely followed professional golf, almost as a way to stay connected to Don. And they were great travelers, making many trips to Europe during their lives together.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Don. She is survived by her daughters Peg Julius (Paul), Julie Ellen, Michelle Hendricks (Jim), and son Scott Trembly, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
