Bernard Walter Schreiber

June 30, 1933 – September 2, 2024

Bernard “Bernie” Schreiber, age 91, of Dakota Dunes, SD, passed away peacefully at Holy Spirit Retirement Home on September 2, 2024. Born on June 30, 1933, in Sioux City, IA, to Walter “Wally” Michael and Sophia Gertrude Schreiber, Bernie was a man deeply devoted to his family, faith, and community.

Bernie married Judith Ann Shea in 1963, and two children, Tracy Lynne and Walter Michael, were born to this union. Bernie and Judy shared 36 years of marriage until her passing in 2000. In 2013, Bernie found love again and married Nyla Grace Hamm, with whom he enjoyed 11 years of companionship.

A 1951 graduate of Heelan High School, Bernie went on to excel as a second baseman at Ole Miss, becoming their first All-American and later a Hall of Fame inductee in 1988. His passion for sports continued with three seasons in minor league baseball within the Yankees organization. Beyond baseball, Bernie, alongside his brother-in-law Jim Goergen, took over as proprietors of Park Bowl after his father's passing in 1964. Together, they operated one of the area’s premier bowling centers until it tragically burned down in 1987. The legacy of their partnership endures through the annual Park Bowl Open golf tournament, which commemorates their once-thriving business.

A devout Catholic, Bernie was a dedicated member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He also attended daily noon Mass at the Cathedral, where he loved assisting with the collection. His commitment to his church community was a significant part of his life.

He was a passionate supporter of Bishop Heelan High School, attending games and events well into his later years. His love for his community and his family was evident in everything he did.

Bernie is survived by his loving wife, Nyla, son Wally of Lake Worth, FL, siblings Sharon (Max) Godfrey of Sioux City and Connie (Larry) Chapman of Okoboji, IA, brother-in-law Rob (Jane) Happe of Carrollton, TX, Nyla’s sons Chris (Jennifer) Hamm, Rod (Cathy) Hamm, and Kirk (Lisa) Hamm, many nieces and nephews and a community of friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Judy, daughter Tracy, and siblings Jolene Happe and Blanche Goergen, and brother-in-law Jim Goergen.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 5010 Military Road, Sioux City, IA at 11:00 AM on Tuesday September 10. Visitation is 9:30 – 11:00 prior to mass at the Church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, IA immediately following.
