Bernard Philip “Bernie” McBride, 87, of rural Smithland, IA passed away on Friday, January 6, 2023 at a Sioux City Hospital.
Services will be 7 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2023 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be 10:30 Friday, January 20, 2023 at Little Sioux Twp. Cemetery – Smithland, IA.
Bernard Philip, the son Bernard F. and Hazel (DeHarty) McBride, was born July 13, 1935 in Sioux City, IA. In his early years, Bernie lived in several different locations due to his dad serving in the United States Navy. Bernie graduated from Central High School in Sioux City then attended Morningside College for one year. He joined the United States Marine Corp. and served until his honorable discharge.
On October 11, 1958, Bernie was united in marriage to Joyce J. Brekke at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City. This union was blessed with two sons, Mike and Doug. The family made their home in Sioux City and Bernie worked for an optical company for nine years then worked at Terra for thirty-two years retiring as a superintendent in 1998. In 2000, Bernie and Joyce moved from Sioux City to an acreage near Smithland, IA. Joyce passed away on February 11, 2018.
Bernie was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City then St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. He was also a member of the Smithland American Legion. His hobbies included: hunting, fishing, camping, horses, wood working, and taking care of the 80-acre farm.
He is survived by two sons: Mike (Penny) McBride of Pierson, IA and Doug (Carmel Berglin) McBride of Springfield, SD; five grandchildren: Kristopher (Amber) Goeden of Waukee, IA, Tyler McBride, Casey McBride, and Savannah McBride all of Sioux City, IA, and Shelby McBride of Sioux Falls, SD; two great grandchildren: Krew and Slater Goeden of Waukee, IA; and two brothers: Ronnie (Carol) McBride of Phoenix, AZ and Denny (Marilyn) McBride of Des Moines, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard F. and Hazel McBride, and his wife, Joyce McBride.
