Sioux City, IA — Barbara Lorraine Donnell, passed away on 3/19/2026 at the age of 90. Barbara "Barb"/"Babs" was born on May 6, 1935 in Anthon, IA, the daughter of Robert Wilberforce "RW" and Lucille (Smith) Maddison.
She leaves her one son, Mark Donnell and his wife Deb of Smithville, MO; two daughters, Carol (Donnell) Patterson of Olathe, KS, and Jennifer (Donnell) Blank and her husband Jeff of Grimes, IA; two stepsons, Gene Donnell and his wife Cathy of Denver, CO, and Jerry Donnell of Norway, IA; and one stepdaughter Judy (Donnell) Moyer of Thornton, CO. 14 grandchildren, Allison, Amanda (Goodenow), Brandon, Danielle (Hickman), Ashley and Caleb Donnell; Pierce and Paige Patterson, Lexi (Schneider) and Kylee Blank; Shannon Donnell; Alicia Donnell; Jennifer and Jonathon Moyer; and 6 great grandchildren.
Barb was a RN for several years at the Winnebago Hospital in Winnebago, NE. She was also a RN until her retirement at Countryside Nursing Home in Sioux City, IA. Barb attended college at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines, IA where she received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing (RN) degree. After college she did her residency at St Lukes Hospital in Sioux City, IA. It was during her nursing residency that she met her husband Bill and were married for 57 years.
Barb had a passion for family vacations and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Barb was known as a generous, caring and loving to all who knew her. She was a member of the Whitfield United Methodist Church in Sioux City, IA.
For the past 7 years she has been a resident at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in Olathe, KS. It was here that she really lit up rooms with her smile and generosity. She was deeply loved by all the staff and residents. She was known for "assisting" the RNs with training of new staff and nicknamed "Sarge".
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William "Bill”, and one brother Ralph.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 27th with family visitation starting at 10 am and funeral service commencing at 11 am at Whitfield United Methodist Church, 1319 West 5th Street, Sioux City, IA. There will be a luncheon after the funeral in the fellowship room of the church. Burial will follow the luncheon at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, IA.
