Anna was born May 2, 1934 in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of John and Eva (Holbrook) Nelson. She grew up in and around Sioux City. On January 26, 1951, she married the love of her life, Charles Hughes. They started their married life in Sioux City, before moving to a farm in rural Westfield, Iowa in 1959. There, they raised their three children and helped raise most of the grandchildren.

Anna was a true farm wife. She loved taking care of her family, cooking, baking, gardening, and canning. She loved her flowers, and she did many crafts and paintings, often entering them in the Plymouth County Fair, where she won many ribbons. Her doll collection is overwhelming, and her love of antiques is evident in the log home that she and Charles built on top of a windy hill on the farm.

Anna loved her “coffee time” with treasured friends, Violet Husk and Eleanor Zimmerman.  She was a member of Glendale Community Baptist Church in Sioux City, where she and Charles were married.  Charles and Anna spent many winters in Mission, Texas, where she loved going for walks, shopping at flea markets, and trips into Mexico.  Anna’s greatest treasures were her family.

Anna is survived by her husband Charles; children Randy Hughes, Relda (Jim) Zemanek, and Milo (Julie) Hughes; grandchildren Kristi (Joshua) Husk, Tim Zemanek, Tasha (Adam) Burns, Clint (Jessica) Hughes, Corey (Brittany) Hughes, and Kyle (Haley) Hughes; great-grandchildren Willow, Zander, Kendra (Noah), Preston, Sophia, Isabella, Mackenzie, Brooklyn, Charlie, Jack, Luke; and a great-great-granddaughter Eliza.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Berniece, Ivy, and Leona; mother and father-in-law Helen and Floyd Hughes; brother-in-law Vincent Hughes; sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Dwayne Waddell; and daughter-in-law Patricia Hughes.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Hospice of Siouxland, and their “angel on earth” Dianna Schultz who cared so lovingly for Anna.
