Ann was born the daughter of Claude and Parthinea (Lee) Backman on May 13, 1948, in Sioux City, Iowa. She had four brothers, Bob, Gary, Edward, and Greg, and one sister, Clarette. She attended St. Michael’s Catholic School in South Sioux City and received her General Education Development certificate from the state of Nebraska where she lived until moving to Sioux City in 1997. She was the loving mother of Brenda and Bruce Combs whom she loved beyond reason. She cared for her children and her two youngest brothers Greg and Edward at the time of her mother’s passing. Ann worked at Interbake Foods and belonged to the Baker’s Union for three decades until her retirement in 2018.
She loved being outdoors, whether at the local swimming pool or tending her lawn and garden. She also loved cooking and spending time with her grandchildren, prioritizing every minute to be with the people who she loved and shares countless memories with. She was a very social lady who made friends everywhere she went. She loved keeping informed with any current events, news, and politics. Most importantly, she kept the Catholic faith close to her heart. She took a holy hour at St. Michaels in South Sioux City and devoutly prayed the rosary for friends, family, and the wellbeing of others. She resided in her Sioux City home for nearly 30 years before her passing. She was a role model of strength, faith, and charity to the people around her. Her laughter, insight, and devotion will be dearly missed.
Ann is survived by her children, Brenda (Merlyn) Kathol of Sioux City, IA. and Bruce Combs of O’Fallon, IL.; seven grandchildren; siblings, Clarette (Dennis) Kober and Gary (Linda) Backman; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Robert, Edward, and Gregory Backman.
