IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alfred “Newt” J.
Newsom
July 3, 1931 – February 7, 2026
Alfred “Newt” J. Newsom, 94 of North Sioux City passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Saturday, February 7, 2026. A funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 14, 2026 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service time at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Newt was born the son of Ben and Elfreida (Wynn) Newsom on July 3, 1931 in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Central High School. Newt married Maurine Cochran on December 2, 1950 in Vancouver, Washington. They traveled the country in their first few years of marriage, having children and chasing iron working jobs. They finally settled in Sioux City to raise their family.
Newt was a member of the Iron Workers Local 21 for 70 years. He laid the foundation for generations of iron workers in the Newsom family. He worked on countless infrastructure projects across the country including the iconic Siouxland Veterans Memorial Bridge. He stayed active in his retirement walking Riverside every day. When he got too old for that, he did stationary bike.
Newt was a man of few words and quick-witted humor. He often had his family laughing until they cried. Most days he could be found hanging out in his garage tinkering on his latest project or building something. He also liked collecting tools and looking at classic cars. He taught himself how to play the drums after Maurine wanted him to be involved in the family band. They enjoyed playing and dancing together.
Newt honorably served his country in the United States Air Force in the motor pool division.
He is survived by his wife, Maurine Newsom; children, Renee (Derrall) Minor, Lea Canoles, Karla Davis, Boyd (Janice) Newsom, Tracy (Randy) Linduski, and Kelly Malcom; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Chuck and Joyce; and sons-in-law, Walt and Bruce.
