Joie Stabile

June 1, 1930 — October 6, 2023

Sioux City

  A. Josephine “Joie” Stabile, 93, died peacefully in Sioux City on Oct. 6, 2023, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City. A visitation with the family will be at the church from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. before the service.

Joie was born on June 1, 1930, at home on the family farm in Wakonda, S.D., to John “Jack” and Agnes Dixon. She had a beloved older sister, Anna Mae. She was a spirited tumbler before graduating from Wakonda High School in 1948, and then went to National Business Training school in Sioux City. She worked at Crescent Electric. She later managed the lunch program at Bishop Heelan High School, where she served lunch to thousands of students. She was a favorite of staff and students over her 21 years at Heelan.

Joie married Nick Stabile in Sioux City on June 27, 1953, which she always said was the best day of her life. They raised seven children, her favorite of which has yet to be determined. She was a dedicated stay-at-home mom and spent countless hours supporting her children in football, wrestling, baseball, marathons and more. She always remained their greatest fan.

Joie loved cheering on the Heelan Crusaders, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers, frequenting lounges, playing cards and taking people’s money while winning at poker, hosting loved ones around her kitchen table, and spending time with her family and friends. Joie was a beloved mom, grandma, aunt and friend to many. The fun and love she provided to everyone will be dearly missed.

Joie is survived by her children, Dan (Geri) of Cedar Rapids, Mike (Diana) of Leonardtown, MD, Ron (Dawn) of Lenhartsville, PA, Linda of Sioux City, Tim (Carla) of Ottumwa, Jerry (Jenny) of Raleigh, NC, and Nick (Monica) of Sioux City; 16 grandchildren, Dan, Debbie, James, Joanna, John, Jena, Nick, Jamie, Jackson, Sarah, Jack, Alexis, Megan, Sammy Jo, Cooper and Sophie; 16 great grandchildren; 16 nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick; parents, Jack and Agnes Dixon; sister, Anna Mae (Roger) Johnson; her husband’s siblings, Frank (Kate) Stabile, Catherine Stabile, Rose (Archie) Kelly, Mary (Merle) Amelang, Josie (Leo) Prochelo, and Angeline (Fred) Ashley; and three nephews and a niece.

In her final years, Joie was lovingly cared for by her daughter and best friend, Linda. Joie will be buried at the family cemetery in Wakonda. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ann Rehan Goebel Foundation at argfoundation.org.
