Earl A. Ashcraft

Earl A. Ashcraft, 106, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Gregory Hanneman of St. John Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Earl was born April 9, 1900, in Kennebec, S.D., the son of Irving and Zada Ashcraft.

He married Gladys Cooper. She preceded him in death. Later, he married Martha Schmidt. She preceded him in death in January 1978. In June 1978, he was united in marriage to Agusta "Billie" (Lowther) Evers in Laurel, Neb.

He was employed with Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 49 and one half years. Following his retirement from the railroad in 1968, he and his son, Glenn, co-owned and operated the Ashcraft Mobil Station, located at 14th and Jackson Street, for 10 years.

He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Billie; a son and his wife, Glenn and Judith Ashcraft of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Bess and Robert Madsen of Spencer, Iowa; a sister, Violet Dodson of The Dells, Ore.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lillian Sletvold; a brother; and two sisters.

Honorary pallbearers will be William H. Miller, Orville Griener, William LeClair and Larry Armstrong.
