SIOUX CITY -- Marjorie E. Beales, 98, of Sioux City, civic leader and retired telephone company supervisor, passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Sunrise Retirement Community.

Abiding by her wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Augustana Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Del Olivier officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Marjorie was born Sept. 21, 1910, in Sioux City, to Edward M. and Florence (Swandollar) Beales. She received her education at Central High School, graduating with the class of 1928. She continued her education at Morningside College.

She began her career with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company on May 19, 1930, as a long distance operator. She worked her way up during the 45 years of service with the company, working as the personnel and employment supervisor for the final 26 years. She retired in May 1975.

She was a former member of First Baptist Church, was a past president of the women's council and trustee for the church, along with serving on various committees and projects associated with the church. She had been a member of Augustana Lutheran Church since 1995. She was a past president of the Sioux City Quota Club (a professional women's service organization) and district governor of the Seventh District Quota Club International. She was a past member of the St. Luke's Auxiliary as well as a volunteer. She was a past president of Telephone Pioneers in Sioux City.

She enjoyed reading, baking, playing cards and attending the theater in her spare time. She volunteered hundreds of hours to many organizations following her retirement, above are a listing of just a few.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Pauline Beales of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; and personal representatives, Marty and Paula Appelt of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Edd Beales in December 2008.

Memorials may be made to Augustana Lutheran Church.
