Leonard Bretzel

Leonard Bretzel, 93, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at Sunrise Retirement Community following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Leonard was born May 3, 1914, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of John and Louisa (Winter) Bretzel. He attended public school and Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He married Jean Garretson on May 12, 1945, at First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. They have resided in Sioux City since 1946. He was employed in sales at Sears Roebuck for 39 years, retiring in 1970.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed golfing.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jean Bretzel of Sioux City; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and a sister-in-law, Irene Bretzel of Camp Hill, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Albert Bretzel; and a sister, Helen Wessell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
