Lowell Glenn Cole

Lowell G. Cole, 72, of McCook Lake, S.D., died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Westwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City after a long battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riverside Lutheran Church. Private graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel (formerly Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel). Lowell was born May 15, 1934, son of Gordon and Barbara (Schaeffer) Cole, in Sioux City. He was a lifetime Siouxland resident and graduated from Central High School in 1952. He married Mardelle Feelhaver on May 11, 1956, in Coleridge, Neb. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in May. Lowell served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. He was a toolmaker at Sioux Tools for 45 years until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of the Machinist Union for more than 40 years. Lowell served on the Jefferson School Board for nine years.

He attended Riverside Lutheran Church and was also a member of the American Legion and the McCook Lake Ike's Club. Lowell loved his grandchildren. He was a born ball player. He played semi pro baseball in Homer and Coleridge, Neb. Lowell enjoyed coaching softball. He also played fast pitch softball in Sioux City. He loved the outdoors where he enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing, especially teaching his grandchildren to fish. He took pride in his lawn and garden.

Survivors include his wife, Mardell, of McCook Lake; three daughters, Debra and Doug Furlich, of Lawton, Iowa; Cheryl Nordstrom, of Sioux City; and Ann and Mike Cole-Nelson, of Remsen, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Adam and Abby Furlich; Kristine, Keith, Michaela and Seth Nelson; two brothers, Vernon and June Cole, of Huron, S.D., and Gerald Cole, of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Cole of Lincoln, Neb. and Marcia Feelhaver, of Coleridge; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Evelyn Levering, a brother Eugene Cole, a sister-in-law Marian Cole and two brothers-in-law Arthur and Don Feelhaver.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Baldwin, Jeff Wemhoff, Jon Russell, Terry Weber, Larry Becker and Ron Kistner.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Mahnke, Don Duff, Marv Schemmel, Dieter Hallwas, Charles Williams and Wayne Thomas.

Memorials may be made in his name to Hospice of Siouxland.
