Dorothy L. Engel, 77, of Sioux City died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Dorothy was born May 23, 1929, in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of William B. and Edith E. (Kinleyside) Gant. She was a lifelong Sioux City resident.

She married Ruben J. Engel on Oct. 17, 1953, in Akron. He died Oct. 24, 1997, in Sioux City. She was a home economics teacher at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School for 36 years, retiring in 1994. She continued to substitute teach for another 12 years.

She was a member of the Retired Teachers of Sioux City. She was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the church's prayer group, Sunday to Sunday. She was very dedicated to her faith and her family and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and her cats. She also enjoyed reading, bingo and cooking for her family.

Survivors include four children and their spouses, Deborah and Gordy Bishop of Norwalk, Iowa, Kathy and Matt Murfield of Sioux City, Chris and Kelli Engel of Sioux City and Theresa and Guy Hayes of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother and his wife, Bob and Linda Gant of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Rosie and Ray Janosky of Kewaunee, Wis.; 10 grandchildren, Melody and her husband, David Kempf, Megan, Matthew and Miranda Murfield, Christian, Rachel and Caleb Engel, Kaitlyn, Zakhary and Kassidy Hayes; and three great-grandchildren, Lillian, Ashley and Hannah Kempf.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; and a sister.

Pallbearers will be Warren Baker, Bob Gant, Stephen Hayes, Theren Hayes, Maynard Mammen and Matthew Murfield.
