BRONSON, Iowa -- Carl A. Hammond, 64, of Bronson passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at his residence surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Morningside Bible Church, 6100 Morningside Avenue, Sioux City, with the Rev. Terry Embke officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery, Lawton, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. James Thomas officiating, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Carl was born June 15, 1941, in Vermillion, S.D., the son of Hiriam L. "Si" and Gladys (Broyles) Hammond. As a small boy, he lived with his family in Merrill, Iowa, for a brief period, prior to moving to a farm near Rodney, Iowa, in 1951. He graduated from Smithland High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army for three years.

He married Jeanette M. Johnson on April 15, 1962, in Sioux City. The couple lived on an acreage near Sioux City from 1980 until 2001, at which time they moved to their present home near Bronson. He had been employed with AG Processing for 25 years, retiring from there in 2003.

Carl loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and their sporting events. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his horses and time spent on the couple's acreage.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Jeanette; three children and their spouses, Gina and Brad Stephens of Papillion, Neb., Randy and Cami Hammond of Hornick, Iowa, and Shelly Jensen of Bronson; three brothers and their wives, Bob and Terry Hammond of Sioux City, Jack and Dee Hammond of Vail, Ore., and Jim and Sharon Hammond of Vail, Ore.; four sisters and their husbands, Betty and Ray Hoffman of Westfield, Iowa, Pat and Bill Buttery of Irving, Texas, Bev and Marlin Baldwin of Sioux City and Donna and Dave Bryan of Marshall, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Jacob, Jessica and Jamie Stephens, Tanner and Hunter Hammond, Colton, Justin and Shannon Jensen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Timothy; a grandson, Tucker Ken Hammond; a brother, Lee; and an infant sister, Bonnie.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Johnson, Steve Johnson, Mark Johnson, Jerry Johnson, Russ Brown and Keith Frette. Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers.
