Gene Harbeck

SIOUX CITY -- Gene Harbeck, 75, of Sioux City died of congestive heart failure Sunday, May 10, 2009, in the Hospice wing at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center.

Memorial services will 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Church of the Nativity, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will begin at 4:30 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Gene was born Feb. 26, 1934, in Westfield, Iowa, the son of Orville and Hope (Smith) Harbeck. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School.

He married Joan Yoerger on June 30, 1954, in Ellendale, Iowa. The family moved to Bronson, Iowa in 1968 and returned to Sioux City in 2002. He worked in management for Sunshine Food Market for 30 years. He retired from Heyl Truck Lines of Akron, Iowa after working there for 15 years.

He was a member of and past president of the Business Leader's Club. He was a former member of St. Joseph and St. Francis Catholic Churches. He currently was a member of Nativity Catholic Church and Men's Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, gardening and working with horses.

Survivors include his wife, Joan of Sioux City; five children, Cathie and her husband John Jackson of Cleveland, Tenn., Deb and her husband Todd Brown of Clive, Iowa, Jeff Harbeck of Sioux City, Dave Harbeck and his wife Jeri of West Des Moines and Dr. Mark Harbeck of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a sister, Darlene and her husband Harold McSparran of Dakota Dunes; 10 grandchildren, Jay Jackson, Justin Jackson, Michael and Emilye Brown, Matthew, Christopher, Cassandra, Chandler, Cassidy and Carter Harbeck; three stepgrandchildren, Nick, Tyler and Courtney Miller; a great-stepgrandson, Jakobie Miller; and several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

A memorial had been established in his name.
