Funeral services for Clarence "Shorty" Walter Held, 91 of Hinton will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hinton, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Kenneth Schmidt officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, June 12, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel located at 6200 Morningside Ave. Burial will be in the Floyd Valley Cemetery in Merrill, Iowa.
Clarence was born Dec. 28, 1917, in Hinton, the son of Fred W. and Garcia Belle (Yount) Held. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1935.
He was married to Fern Bielfeldt on Sept. 9, 1951, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. He farmed the family farm, which was deeded in 1866 and had been in the family since. He moved off the family farm in 1979.
He had been an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1957. He was an active member for several years with the Hinton Community School Board and the Farm Bureau. He was an avid golfer and Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards and greatly enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered for his jokes and stories.
Survivors include his wife, Fern of Hinton; a daughter, Heidi Johnson of Norfolk, Neb.; a son, Bruce (Barb) Held of Hinton; a daughter, Karen (Leland) Hathaway of Turin, Iowa; a son-in-law, Dr. Frank Bever of Iowa City, Iowa; six grandchildren, Niki (Jon) Friessen, Lindsey Held, Brian Held, Kaylee Hathaway, Stan (Karen) Johnson and Mary Johnson and fiance, Avery Ma; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Held of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Garcia Held; in-laws, John and Adelheid Bielfeldt; a daughter, Marilyn Held Bever; a sister and her husband, Blanche and Ernie Reynolds; three brothers and their wives, Fred Jr. and Irene Held, George and Bertha Held and Wayne and DeLores Held; and brothers-in-law, Emil and John Bielfeldt.
Pallbearers will be Stan Johnson, Brian Held, Jon Friessen, Avery Ma, Don Blackstone, Steve Diediker, Bruce Lahrs and Jason Schoenrock.
Memorials may be sent to Trinity Lutheran Church in Hinton or Hinton Community School Scholarship Fund.
