Margaret E. Hillman

SIOUX CITY -- Margaret E. Hillman, 95, of Sioux City passed away Monday, July 27, 2009, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present at 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Margaret was born April 2, 1914, in Red Oak, Iowa, to Elmer N. and Elsie (Wieland) Anderson. She graduated from Red Oak High School with the class of 1932, before attending junior college in 1933. She taught in a rural school outside of Red Oak from 1934 to 1937. She worked at the Thomas D. Murphy Calendar Company.

She married Cecil Hillman on Aug. 1, 1937, in Red Oak. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1939. She started working for the Earl May Store in sales and bookkeeping.

The couple became members of First United Methodist Church in Sioux City in 1941. Her past memberships include the Business and Professional Women, American Business Women, Zonta and Sioux City Women. Her current memberships are her church, Emerson Study Club, PEO Chapter MK, and TTT Chapter AC. She was giving of her time, volunteering at church, Boy Scouts, Everett and Hopkins Schools, St. Luke's Gift Shop, the election board for 40 years and was a three-gallon donor at the Sioux City Blood Bank. She touched many lives and found her own greatest joys in her family and friends, working with children and the youth along with her service to the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her sons, John Hillman and his wife, Julie of St. Charles, Mo., and Tom Hillman and his wife, Cheryl of Sioux City; grandchildren, Doug Hillman, Lori (Hillman) Sammelmann, Kendra (Hillman) Chilcoat and Megan Hillman; and a great-granddaughter, Gwyneth Chilcoat.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil in 1997; and a brother, Lt. Dean Anderson who was lost at sea in 1942.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be offered to First United Methodist Church in her name.
