Robert G. Kammerer, 83, of Sioux City died Thursday, June 11, 2009, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Madden of First United Methodist Church officiating. His cremated remains will be entrusted to the care of his loving family. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home. Please dress casual for the service. Robert G. Kammerer was born Dec. 31, 1925, at his Morningside family home in Sioux City, the son of Martin and Rose (Schneider) Kammerer. He graduated from Morningside College in 1949. He served in the U.S. Navy assigned to the USS Chuckawan and worked as a mailman, making trips from Virginia to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from July 31, 1944 to July 31, 1946.
He and Kathi Borrall were united on April 14, 1991. He was employed at the Civil Rights Commission and the Department of Human Services for the State of Iowa until his retirement in 1988.
He loved spending time with his dogs, especially his Yorkie, Maggie. He loved to cook and barbecue, work odd jobs and give his family and friends a hard time. He was a member of the Old Fogies Club.
Survivors include his wife, Kathi Borrall of Sioux City; sons, William Kammerer of Worthington, Minn., Michael Kammerer of Anchorage, Alaska, Jeff Borrall of Sioux City, Chad Borrall of Sioux City and Mike Borrall of Canton, S.D.; daughters, Mindee Borrall of Omaha, Patti Bopp of Charlotte, N.C., Barbara Creveling of Lincoln, Neb., and Kristi Kammerer of Des Moines; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and long time friends, Al McCormack, Jim Clift, Mike Ford, Lyle McMillian, Norman Woelber and Bernie Petersen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cherri; three brothers, Jim, Jerry and John; and two sisters-in-law, Margie and Mabel Kammerer.
The family wants to express a special thank you to the nurses and aides on 8SE at Mercy Medical Center - Sioux City, the nurses and aides at Applewood Wing, Sunrise Manor, Hospice of Siouxland, Dr. DeShields, Dr. Preston and Dr. Kellogg.
