Dorothy M. Kjer, 82, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at a local hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Beverly Wolff officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, formerly Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel. Dorothy was born Aug. 9, 1923, in Sioux City, the daughter of Jay C. and Margaret (Marshall) Lynberg. She graduated from Central High School in 1941 and later attended Tri-State Business College. Dorothy was a secretary with the Sioux City School Board for a brief time.

She married Harold E. "Bud" Kjer on Aug. 26, 1942, in Allen, Neb. The couple made their home on a farm near Allen from 1942 to 1984, at which time they moved to Sioux City. Bud preceded her in death on April 29, 1997, in Sioux City.

While residing on the farm, Dorothy was an active member of First Lutheran Church of Allen, serving as a Sunday school teacher and member of LCW and Women's Circle. Having children in the Allen Consolidated School system for 31 years, she was an active member of the PTA. She served as a Dixon County 4-H leader for 15 years and belonged to the Home Extension Club and Pleasant Hour Club. For the past 22 years, she had been a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Sioux City and had belonged to the Rachel Circle.

Survivors include five daughters, Lori Nickerson and her husband, Rod of Omaha, Neb., Kathy Stoker of Papua New Guinea, Jacque Sweet of Sioux City, Sheri Wilberding and her husband, Ed of Fremont, Neb., and Teri Robertson and her husband, Bruce of Omaha; a sister, Darlene Widner and her husband, Bob of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Julie Salmon and her husband, Brian of Omaha, Kyle Nickerson of Maywood, Neb., Rusty Sweet and Curt Sweet, both of Sioux City, Brent Wilberding and his wife, Whitney, and Blake Wilberding, all of Omaha, and Brian Wilberding of Fremont; and four great-grandchildren, Sydney and Jack Salmon, Conner and Grant Sweet.

She also was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lynberg.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Memorials in Dorothy's name are suggested to St. Mark Lutheran Church or charity of the donor's choice.
