SIOUX CITY -- Terence "Terry" G. Lau, 73, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with Pastor Gene Stockton officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present at 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Terry was born Sept. 9, 1935, in Sioux City, to Ronald V. and Ruth M. (Davis) Lau. He received his education in Sioux City Schools before starting his career at Wonderbread as a baker in 1956.
Terry married Kaye A. Hamlow on Oct. 1, 1956, in South Sioux City. He was in the Iowa National Guard from 1953 until 1957 before receiving his draft notice in February 1958. Terry served in the U.S. Army for two years, receiving his honorable discharge in February 1960. He returned to Sioux City and to Wonderbread as a baker until his retirement in 1981.
Terry's love of classic cars served him well by starting his own business, Classic Cars and Parts, which he operated up until his death. He and his wife were past members of the Classic Chevy 50 club, a national collector's club based out of Florida, and locally were members of the Spirit of the 50s Club. Terry had numerous trophies from racing classic cars, Best of Show and swap meets. He also enjoyed baseball and was the groundskeeper for the Westside Little League ball field in Riverside for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife, Kaye of Sioux City; a daughter, Cindy Baker of Sioux City; grandsons, Jason Baker and his wife, Cindy of Alaska, and Joshua Baker and his significant other, Kala of Sioux City; a brother, James M. Lau and his wife, Mary Ann of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Linda R. Bundt of Omaha, Neb.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant great-grandson, Colton Kenneth Baker.
