Don Roger Means

August 20, 1927 — March 16, 2010

SIOUX CITY -- Don R. Means, 82, of Sioux City died Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at a local nursing home following a brief illness with brain cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Don was born Aug. 20, 1927, in Sioux City, to Loren E. and Martha M. (Harjes) Means. He was raised in Castana, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1945. He later graduated from Wayne State College in 1950. Following graduation, he taught for two years.

He was united in marriage to Jean Ann Sharer on June 17, 1952, in Wayne, Neb. Jean preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 1970, in Sioux City. He then became an assistant manager for a men's clothier. He later moved to Sioux City on June 1, 1955, to begin work for New York Life Insurance Company. He continued to work for New York Life as a training manager, retiring in 1989.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where he was an usher and collection taker for many years. He was a past member of Siouxland Chapter C.L.U. and past member of Sioux City Association of Life Underwriters. He enjoyed yard work and walking.

He is survived by three daughters, Mary E. Means of Omaha, Linda A. Means of Little Rock, Ark., and Johanna M. (Bruce) Deats of Omaha; six grandchildren, Jean Ann and Laura Janssen, Aaron, Abby, Lauren and Emma Deats; and a special friend, Sue Ullrich of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Dale Means; and a daughter, Beth M. Janssen.
