Mildred was born Oct. 12, 1920, in Tabor, S.D., the daughter of Charles and Harriet (Dugovic) Novotny. She graduated from Central High School in 1938. A quote from her year book was "She loved to dance; we have it on good authority."
She married Roy Montross on July 2, 1939, in South Sioux City. He preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1999, in Sioux City. She resided in Sioux City and worked for Armours, then the Woodbury County Courthouse in the treasurer's office for 30 years before retiring in 1986.
She was a charter member of the Sioux City Police Auxiliary, holding numerous offices. She also was a life-long member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Sun Valley Women's Golf League. She was an avid bowler and belonged to numerous leagues. She also enjoyed her card club and the wonderful friendships she had from that. She loved her garden, apple and peach trees, and flowers. Garage sales were another hobby she enjoyed after retirement. There was never a more generous person than Mildred and her home was always open to all. No one ever left hungry.
