Donald D. Owings, 78, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Sunrise Retirement Community following an extended illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Dan Lozer of Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Military rites will be provided by the U.S. Naval Reserve. Private burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a 7 p.m. Masonic service by North Riverside Lodge 662 A.F. & A.M., at the funeral home. Donald was born June 28, 1927, in Sac City, Iowa, the son of Arlie B. and Eva Mae (McNeely) Owings. He moved to Sioux City in 1944. He served in both the U.S. Navy and the Seabees during World War II.

He married Mary P. Gleason on Jan. 22, 1946, in Sioux City. He was a refrigerator engineer with Armour's for several years, and later with John Morrell, where he retired.

Don was a member of Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a past Mason and Shriner. He was also an Izaak Walton League board member for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; four children, Donetta D. Musto and her husband, Richard, David A. Owings and his wife, Terri, all of Sioux City, Donald F. Owings and his wife, Connie of Omaha and Eric E. Owings of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Jerry Owings and his wife, Mary of Sioux City and Arlie "Bud" Owings and his wife, Mary of California; three sisters, Beverly Riley of Sioux City, Bonnie Ammons of Des Moines and Janice Boing and her husband, Bob of Michigan; six grandchildren, Tony Musto, Cody Owings, Jesse Owings, Brady Owings, Kelson Owings, and Mahrin Owings; two great-grandchildren, Connor Owings and Lexie Owings; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Douglas E. Owings and Dennis P. Owings; and an infant grandson, Colby Marvin Owings.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
