HINTON, Iowa -- Darvin C. "Dar" Richards, 83, of Hinton died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, with the Revs. Steven Stoll and Ralph Shorey officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Casper Post 477 of Hinton. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Dar was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Steen, Minn., the son of Box and Bricky (Casper) Richards. He moved with his family to Hinton as a child. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was stationed at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
He married Mildred Hahn on Oct. 17, 1946, in Hinton. He worked for the railroad for 13 years, for the Hinton Hardware Store and Tower Construction before starting his own business. He owned and operated the Mobil Service Station in Hinton from 1961 until his retirement in 1988.
He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He had served in the Hinton city council. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching sports and stripping copper wire. Over the years, he truly enjoyed spending time with his two grandsons, Matt and Rusty, and attending their activities.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mildred of Hinton; a daughter, Kristy, and her husband, Ross Beisner, of Sioux City; a brother, Donald Richards, and his wife, Joanne, of Hinton; a sister, Darlene and her husband, DeWayne Roetman, of Pocahontas, Iowa; and two grandsons, Matthew Flannery and his wife, Angela, and Rusty Flannery and his wife, Kacey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Dick Richards.
Pallbearers will be Matthew and Rusty Flannery, Ross Beisner, Norman Thoreson, Curt Richards, Joel Roetman and Mike and Rich Richards.
