Vincent E. Hirschman, 96, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 13, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Revs. Daniel Guenther and Patrick Walsh officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation with the family will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com. Vincent was born on Aug. 14, 1915, on a farm near Hartington, Neb., the son of Edward and Ruth (French) Hirschman. He grew up in the Oelrichs, S.D., area and graduated from Oelrichs High School. He moved back to Hartington and farmed in the Hartington area before his marriage to Elsie O'Gara on July 8, 1939, in Laurel, Neb. Elsie died on July 9, 2001, in Sioux City. In 1941, Vincent and Elsie moved to California, where Vincent worked for Lockheed Aircraft Co. In 1945, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during the occupation of Japan and was discharged in 1946. After the war, they came to Sioux City and he worked for Burke Limber for about 15 years. He then went to work for Sioux City Grain Exchange and worked there until retiring in 1977. Vincent was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He enjoyed nature, wildlife and traveling. Survivors include three sons and their wives, Denis and Sherry Hirschman of Sioux City, Roger and Kim Hirschman of Princeton, Minn., and Paul and Sara Hirschman of Sioux City; four grandchildren and their spouses, Matthew and Liza Hirschman, Melissa and Scott Upton, Rita and Mike Schmidt, and Helen and Bill Franklin; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elsie; and a daughter-in-law, Mary. Pallbearers will be Mary Thoelke, Peggy Partin, Joe, Tom, Dan, Jean and Leo Lorang. Memorials may be made in his name to Bishop Heelan Pride Campaign.
