Donald Gill, 81, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Holy Spirit Retirement Community. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, Nebraska with Father Paul Albenesius as Celebrant. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery in rural Jackson. Visitation will be at the church on Monday, March 10th from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present at 6:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials be made to Hospice of Siouxland. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Don was born on April 12, 1932 in rural Jackson, Nebraska to James H. and Mary L. (Merchant) Gill. His education was in the Jackson Public Schools before graduating from Bishop Heelan Catholic School in Sioux City with the Class of 1951. Don served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and received an honorable discharge. Don was an iron worker, working with steel erection throughout the Midwest. His career ended in 1984 when he was injured on the job while living in Omaha, and has been disabled since. Don was a member of the Iron Worker's Local No. 21 in Omaha, a former member of the Sierra Club, and a past member of the La Salle Club. Don had passion for wildlife, nature, and enjoyed photography. He was very close to his family, especially to his nieces and nephews. Don is survived by his brothers John F. Gill of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Harold Gill of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Leonard P. Gill and his wife Roberta of Jackson, Nebraska, Mike R. Gill and his wife Joyce of Sioux City, Iowa, David Gill of South Sioux City, Nebraska, and Joe Gill and his wife Millie of Jackson, Nebraska; sister Rose Murphy and her husband Earl of Southwick, Massachusetts; 41 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Florence Branch and her husband Leonard, Patricia Bateman and her husband Don, Mary Ann Mahon and her husband Gene, sisters-in-law Margaret (Olson) Gill, Evelyn (Chase) Gill, and Donna McCardle, and four nieces and nephews. Casketbearers for the Mass will be Ron Branch, David L. Gill, Jim Gill, John Bateman, Bob Gill, Gabriel Gill, David J. Gill, and Ron Gill.
