Helen M. Nelson, 74, of Sioux City passed away Monday, March 10, 2014 at a local hospital. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Deacon Fred Karpuk officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. with family present from 6-8 P.M. and a vigil service at 7:00 P.M. Friday, March 14, 2014 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Helen was born August 20, 1939 in Le Mars, IA the daughter of J. Henry and Catherine (Colling) Haverkamp. She grew up in Remsen and attended St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing, graduating in 1960. Helen married Robert Nelson on June 17, 1961 in Remsen. The couple owned and operated the Pizza Oven until 1976 and then Helen worked on the OB floor of Marion Heath Center, retiring in May of 2005. Helen enjoyed bowling and was an avid couponer. She was a member of the St. Joseph Alumni Honor Guard. Survivors include her children: Deb and husband Josh Walker of Minneapolis, MN, Rob Nelson of Albuquerque, NM, Sue and husband Rick Ellison of Sioux City, and Jeff and wife Sara Nelson of Sioux City; Grandchildren: Richard and wife Amanda Ellison, Michael Ellison, Gregory Ellison, and Sofia Nelson; great grandson Richard Ellison; and siblings Martha Haverkamp, Mary Masuen, and Clarence Haverkamp. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Pallbearers will be Jeff Nelson, Rick Ellison, Josh Walker, Richard Ellison, Michael Ellison and Gregory Ellison.
