Darrel M. Kessler, 73 of Sioux City passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 while on vacation from complications due to heart problems in Fargo, ND. Funeral services will be on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, August 7, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Darrel was born on March 30, 1941 in Rock Valley, IA to Marzo and Rosie (Klein) Kessler. He graduated from Rock Valley High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for 5 years. He married Vonnie Duits in January of 1963 in Rock Valley, Iowa while he was in the service. He worked for 41 years as a Lineman for IPS which later became Mid-American. In his free time, Darrel enjoyed golfing, flying model planes, playing cards, reading westerns, watching and being an active part of his children's and grandchildren's lives. He was well known by family and friends as a handy man being able to help you with any task, chore or mechanical problem. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Siouxland Radio Control Modelers, Golden Kernels, Senior Men's Golf League in Hinton, and Pheasants Forever. He is survived by his wife Vonnie Kessler; 3 daughters Tricia (Steve) Church; Kathy (Kevin) Fickett; Bobbi Boogerd and fiancée Todd Case; 6 grandchildren Allison Cohrs; Aubri Boogerd; Karli Church; Bret Boogerd; Veronica Boogerd; and Harmony Case; 4 great grandchildren Ellie Cohrs; Ben Cohrs; Noah Cohrs; and Levi Cohrs; a brother Don (Carolyn) Kessler all of Sioux City; 2 sisters Kae (Don) Clay of Hampton, IA and Karel (Bob) Van Roekel of Guthrie Center; 13 nieces and nephews and many others who called him dad and grandpa. He was preceded in death by his parents.
