Mary Ann McKay

September 1, 1924 — January 4, 2015

Our family Matriarch, Mary Ann McKay, was summoned home at 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2015, having reached the age of 90 years, 4 months and 3 days. Mary Ann's family that warmly greeted and welcomed her into eternal peace were her husband, her parents Ferdinand August and Rosa (Dau) Schmidt, sister Leone, brothers Herbert, LuVerne, Leonard, Lewis, Leo and Glenn. Visitation will be held at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 8th with the family present from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and a prayer service beginning at 7:00. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 9th, at Concorida Lutheran Church with the Pastor Henry Witte officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mary Ann was born the youngest of eight children on Monday, September 1, 1924, in Galva, Iowa to Ferdinand August and Rosa (Dau) Schmidt. She was baptized and reared in the faith of her parents; being confirmed into The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The Schmidt family relocated from Galva to Ida Grove, Iowa where Mary Ann received her formal education and graduated in 1942. After graduation she worked as a telephone operator and then as a bookkeeper for McKay Implement, Co. On April 18, 1952 in Ida Grove, Iowa, Mary Ann Schmidt and Robert Lyle McKay were united in marriage. Into this union four children were born, nourished and loved: Steven, Mary Ellen, Kent and Lyn. In 1952 Bob began his 28 year career with Iowa Public Service and they moved 7 times in 7 years until his job assignment took them to Sioux City in 1959. Their friendship with several couples from their home town never faded. With retirement came the great joys of travel, some trips might have consisted of a day or two while others lasted several weeks and there was always time to stop for a cup of coffee (black only no cream or sugar). After Bob's passing on July 16, 1988, Mary Ann continued to travel to see family and friends. Mary Ann was always up for a card game or two and there wasn't a crossword puzzle that could elude her mind or the lead of her pencil. Mary Ann was an avid gardener, baker of her children's birthday cakes and a sports fan of Iowa Hawkeye basketball and football. Most of all her favorite times were those that she spent taking her grandchildren places, watching their sporting events or enjoying a donut with them at the Sunshine Grocery Store Restaurant. Those that cherish Mary Ann's memories are the families of Steven C. McKay, Mary Ellen (Dan) Young, Kent W. McKay, Lyn L. (Terry) Stanek, and daughter-in-law Carol McKay. Grandchildren Melissa Schindel(Tim Mears), Steven M. (Jana) McKay, Todd (Jewell) Young, David Young, Eric McKay, Justin McKay(Jennifer Dierks), Michael McKay(Julie Selk), Amanda (Forrest) Dunham, Forest Schuldt(Tiffany Abbe), Holli (Jeramiah) Bradshaw, Heather (Jon) Murad and Amber (Jason) Franco. Great grandchildren Jordan and Cooper Schindel, Holland and Piper McKay, Jaden and Lillie Young, Adilynn Brown, Olivia and Sophia Dunham, Elizabeth and Zori Schuldt, Ella, Avery, Addison and Isabel Bradshaw, Jacob and Josie Murad, Aden Pech and Giselle Franco. Our deepest gratitude goes out to the following care givers who cared, loved, nourished and respected our Mother just as we did: Brittney Thomas, Nancy Young, Rhonda Young, The Alzheimer's Day Care, Goodwill Adult Day Care and, in her final year, by the wonderful compassionate staff of Holy Spirit Retirement Home.
