Robert L. "Bob" Mahon, 81, of Sioux City, passed away Monday, January 5, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, Nebraska. Visitation will be Friday, January 9, 2015 from 4 to 8 P.M. with family present 6 to 8 P.M. with a Rosary at 6:30 P.M. and a Vigil at 7 P.M. all at the church. Robert was born the son of James and Ruby (Klepper) Mahon on June 20, 1933 in Ponca, Nebraska. He received a Bachelor's degree from Westmar University and a Master's degree from the University of South Dakota. Bob married June E. Holman on October 13, 1959 in Elk Point, South Dakota. Bob and June were married for 56 years. He was a teacher for many years in the Sioux City Community Schools where he taught fifth and sixth grade and math and science at Irving, Webster, and West Middle schools. Bob was a true patriot who loved his country. Bob served in the United States Marine Corps. As a member of the 1st Marine Division he served in the Korean War. He was a proud Marine. Bob was in the second graduating class of Heelan High School and was a lifelong supporter of Heelan and of Catholic Education. Bob was a fourth degree knight with the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Monahan - Nelson American Legion Post #64. He was a member of St. Casimir Catholic Church where he was a reader at mass for 20 years. After St. Casimir closed Bob and June joined St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Jackson, Nebraska. Bob was of Irish decent so June and Bob were at home at St. Patrick's and loved being members of the church. Bob was a devoted Catholic who rarely missed mass. Bob was very active in veteran's affairs and especially in the American Legion where he held many, many posts, local and statewide, including the post of Commander for the State of Iowa. During his post as State Commander Bob enjoyed traveling to all the different American Legion posts in the state. Bob enjoyed being a Marine, a grandfather, and smoking his cigars. Bob and June enjoyed going to their cabin in Springfield, SD and sitting on the deck looking over the water. Bob is survived by his wife, June Mahon of Sioux City; one son, Robin "Rob" Mahon of Sioux City; one step-daughter, Katherine (Darwin) Schumann of Valley Center, Kansas; former daughter in law, Pamela Persinger-Mahon; three grandchildren, Reilly Susan, Sean Robert, and Joseph James; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John D, James, and Eugene; and three sisters, Charlotte, Shirley, and Ruth.
