Maynard H. Porter Jr.

September 10, 1945 — December 6, 2015

Maynard H. Porter Jr. passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness Sunday December 6, 2015. Memorial Services will be 12:00 p.m. Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel 3220 Stonepark Blvd. Reception to follow at the Pierce Mansion. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Maynard H. Porter Jr. was born September 10, 1945 in Sioux City, IA, to Dr. Maynard H. and Florence (Carroll) Porter.  Maynard grew up and graduated from Parkston H.S., Parkston, SD.                                                
Maynard served in the U.S. Navy and graduated with an M.S. in Psychology from the University of South Dakota. Maynard married Brenda Tofflemire in 1970 in Wessington Springs, SD.  He began his career in Sioux City as a probation officer and transitioned to establishing the Alcohol Safety Action Program across the state with the Department of Correctional Services as a state field coordinator.  Maynard has been a landlord in Sioux City for over 35 years and has also taught at WITCC as an Adjunct Professor.  Maynard was passionate about the Sioux City Public Museum, volunteering and serving on the board for over 30 years.  He served on various boards around Siouxland and was involved in Mothers Against Drunk Driving.  He also loved the railroad, trains, and enjoyed hunting. Maynard will be remembered for his willingness to always help other people with projects and his ability to help others reach their potential.  He was extremely generous, forgiving, and showed unconditional love to family and friends. It has been said that he was a man that would give you the shirt off his back and then drive great distances to bring it to you. Mr. Porter is survived by his wife Brenda of Sioux City, Melissa Brissette and her husband Lee of Surprise AZ, Mark Porter and his wife Erin of Lakeville MN, Marenda and her husband Dr. Michael Avery of Rapid City, SD, Mariah Doolittle and her husband Jim of Burke, VA, and honorary son Damon Mothershead of Sioux City, IA,. Grandchildren include Riley Porter, Arabella Brissette, Maddux Brissette, Teagan Porter, Oscar Avery, Socorra Mothershead, Wriglee Brissette, Sloane Avery, and Porter Doolittle. Sisters Carol Kabeisman and her husband Earl, Dianne Iverson, Becky Watson and her husband Michael and Denise Jorgensen and her husband Greg.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Mark Thomas Porter, and brother in law Dr. Greg Iverson.
