SIOUX CITY, IA | Mae L. Hanna, 88, of Sioux City, passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2016 at Brookdale Senior Living.
 
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, 2016 at St. Thomas Orthodox Church with Father Lucas Rice officiating. Burial will be in St. Thomas Orthodox Cemetery inside of Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday and a Trisagion service at 7:00 p.m. all at the church. Condolences may be sent online at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
 
Mae was born April 27, 1928 in Sioux City. She was the daughter of Elias and Habooba (Headid) Hanna and grew up with 9 brothers and sisters. After high school she went to Washington, DC where she served with the U.S. Navy Reserve. She was a legal secretary for a Navy captain.
 
While still in the Reserves, she met her future husband and had her first child, Derrill. They moved to California where she had 2 more children, Sandra and Holly. She was an excellent stay at home mom who was always there for her children! Her husband was transferred to Boulder, Colo. in 1968. Shortly after that they divorced.
 
Mae went to nursing school and earned her LPN degree. She was an ICU and oncology nurse for 30 years in Boulder and then in California. In 1988 she moved back to Sioux City to be with her family. She worked for St. Luke’s Medical Center for 5 years before retiring.
 
She then became active doing volunteer work. Mae volunteered for 10 years for the Sioux City Community School District as an aide in special education. She loved the children she worked with. She also volunteered for St. Thomas Orthodox Church, the Senior Center and the Police Dept., which she really enjoyed.            
 
Survivors include her children, Derrill Tarbutton and his wife, Terry, Sandra O'Connor, and Holly Tarbutton; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michael, Timothy, Nicole and Dylan; a brother, Phil Hanna; and nieces and nephews.
 
Pallbearers will be Dylan Martinez, Mark Hanna, Scott Haberer, Gerry Stevens, Myron Rambousek and Don Hanna.
 
Memorials may be made in her name to Hospice of Siouxland or St. Thomas Orthodox Church.
