Mary Jane Sorensen

SIOUX CITY, IA | Mary Jane Sorensen, 96, of Sierra Vista, AZ and formerly of Sioux City, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2016 in Arizona.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Her son-in-law, Martin Crabb will officiate. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Mary Jane was born May 4, 1920 in Winkelman, AZ the daughter of William and Mina (McGahen) Hanny. She grew up in Robinson, KS then attended Highland (Kansas) College for one year. She worked for the Kansas State House and then for the Santa Fe Railroad, both in Topeka.

On January 7, 1946 she married Clarence M. “Flash” Sorensen in Topeka, KS. The couple made their home in Sioux City that same year. Together they raised four children, Michael, Janet, Marcia and Mary Lou. Flash passed away August 19, 1994. Mary Jane moved to Colorado in 2001 to live with her daughter and they moved to Arizona in 2005.

Mary Jane was a longtime member of Riverside United Methodist Church. She was a member of the D.A.V. Chapter 54 Auxiliary and volunteered in their thrift shop for many years. She was a longtime volunteer at the Sgt. Floyd River Museum and Welcome Center and was a 10 year volunteer with R.S.V.P.

Mary Jane loved music, reading, cross word puzzles and home decorating. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include; three daughters and their husbands, Janet and John Flanagan of Hereford, AZ; Marcia and Martin Crabb of Arvada, CO and Mary Lou Elliott of Westminster, CO.; 12 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; and loving extended family and many dear friends

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, C.M. “Flash” Sorensen, son, Michael Sorensen, two brothers and their wives, W.F. “Pat” (Charlotte) Hanny and William (Kate) Hanny.
