Edward Harley Matney, 67 of Sioux City, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at Morningside Lutheran Church. Rev. Darrin Vick will officiate. Burial will be in Omaha Valley Cemetery, rural Homer, NE. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. all at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Ed was born February 24, 1951 in Sioux City; he was the son of Edward E. and Lillie M. (Hiserote) Matney. Ed grew up in South Sioux City. He graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1969 and then graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Following college, Ed returned to South Sioux City and joined the family business. Ed worked in the family business of long-term care for over 40 years. He was also a home builder, property manager, and land developer.
On December 21, 1969, Ed married Nicola Malcom when they eloped together in Mexico. Nicola passed away June 15, 1998 in Sioux City. Ed married Lisa M. Verschoor September 21, 2002 in Lawton. Ed considered himself the luckiest man in the world because he was blessed with two amazing spouses that he loved & cherished.
Ed was a beacon of light in this world for those whom he loved. Through countless storms his light guided us to safety. Ed provided us with patience, understanding, and love. We are now bereft of Ed’s light and must attempt to find meaning in the shadow of his absence. We will cling to our memories of Ed and be forever grateful for the time we shared together.
Ed was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church. He was a fan of Husker football, fast cars, and fine cuisine. He was a dedicated husband, father, and family man. Ed enjoyed spending time with those he loved including his wife Lisa, his sister Caroline Matney, his children, and his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Lisa; his children: Edward Harold Matney (Mel), Melanie Matney, Amy Aragon (Alfredo), Nicholas Matney (Jessica) and Elizabeth Lucken; 4 sisters, 20 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nicola, his Uncle Harley and numerous other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Northeast Community College at: Northeast Foundation, 801 E Benjamin Avenue, Norfolk, NE 68702 with a notation of Siouxland Community Scholarship.
